Most of us prefer to marry in the summer, maybe because wedding fantasies do not include umbrellas, puddles, and runny noses. But there are other options - and here is a half-serious list
These are the last days of the wedding season in Israel, beginning sometime at the end of May, leaving behind thousands of empty bank accounts, millions of orphaned chicken dishes and many tsk-tsks of sweaty Polish women who swear that "my daughter will never marry at that hole!" But every end is also a beginning: right after the holidays, the dry winter season of Israeli weddings begins. Most of us prefer to marry in the summer, perhaps because wedding fantasies take place in a world where the knight and his princess ride off into the sunset under a clear blue sky, with not an umbrella or a runny nose in sight. However, in recent years, you've probably heard, some articles try to persuade couples to marry in the winter: prices are lower, there are less weddings so your guests will cough up more cash, winter here is not really winter, and even when it is, it's more romantic, and so on. Not convinced? Nor am I. But here are 11 other reasons why you should marry in the winter. You sweat less in the winter - sweat has many shapes and forms, and it likes to surprise us at many places in our wedding. Wherever it chooses to appear, it doesn't look good in photos. It starts with the shining face in the preparation photos, ending in sweaty armpit circles on the groom, or worse, his mother. In winter, the humidity drops and the circles are smaller… You look best in winter - Everyone looks worse in winter. That's a fact. Less sunlight, too many holiday meals, and other calories make your guests pale and plump, and therefore no one stands the chance of stealing your place in the spotlight. In the winter there are no summer hits - every summer brings the latest summer hit, usually with a catchy tune and silly words. You hear the song on the car radio, in the grocery store, from the neighbors, and from any source carrying sound waves. Any amateur DJ knows that playing the summer hit makes the sleepy guests jump to their feet with a glazed look in their eyes. Even if you can't remember any such hit, let me remind you: Numa Numa Hey, Coco Jumbo, The Ketchup Song, Lambada, Yeke Yeke, Latinos, and so forth. So as I've said, there are no summer hits in winter. In winter, the Rabbi is appropriately dresses - Guys, think about the Rabbi. He wears a three-piece suit, a Tallis, and a hat. In the winter, your hairstyle stays in place - How many guests do you have whose hair is naturally straight? If you want to find out - marry in the summer. If not, winter is the time. In winter you will still be together - if your wedding proposal just happened and you are planning a summer wedding, it means that you are facing almost a year of wedding preparations. Let me warn you. Wedding planning brings people to the edge. Primarily the bride and the groom's mother. Do yourselves a favor and get it over with as soon as possible. There's nothing to do in winter anyway - Why not get married and get it over with? Besides, your guests don't have other plans anyway, they're not even missing anything on TV, like the World Cup, American Idol, or The Olympics. In winter you go on distant honeymoons - When it's winter in Israel, it's summer at the most attractive locations, such as Argentina, Australia, Thailand, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, in short - you will be forced to go on honeymoon in such places. And when you have to, you have to…. In the winter the guests make the most of their investment - as I've mentioned, in winter people eat more. That means your guests will not think twice before having another steak or chocolate soufflé. They will drink better drinks at the bar, such as whiskey, and not cheap frozen Margaritas the barman tries to push during summer. Next winter could be summer - the world is getting warmer, I swear. Read the papers. And it's getting worse. At this rate, with all the advantages I've mentioned, plan a winter wedding, and you'll get a summer wedding. It's worth a shot. This is all good and well, but the best reason for marrying in winter, is that during the reception, they serve hot soup. I rest my case. And most importantly, remember to enjoy the whole deal… Mazal Tov! |
