The Wedding Dress - How and Where?

There's only one mother or wedding dress. But there are many ways to get one - buying, renting, making, or receiving one as a gift. What's best? Look inside.
I'm not a woman. I'm a man, as can be proved by my love of ball games, sports editions, and black electric appliances. Sometimes I find it important to mention this, because my vast occupation with the field of weddings causes many a raised eyebrow. Especially when I write about the things that are totally women's territory: makeup, eyebrows, and white-colored shoes.

After my point has been made, let's move on to this article: prepare your wallet - all the ways to get a wedding dress

A wedding dress is one of the things you will need for your wedding, and so I have laid out all the means of obtaining one: we will temporarily forget the fact that the search will drive you out of your mind, you will cry once or twice, and be sure that you have to take off 5 kgs (whether you weigh 52 or 82 kilos) and focus only on the technicalities, because explaining the psyche of a woman in search of a wedding dress is more complicated than quantum physics.

Brand New Firsthand

Well, that's easy.
There are over 500 wedding dress designers from Dan to Eilat (and 499 of them are on Dizengoff St. in Tel Aviv). Prices vary among designers and depend on things other than the designer's name, such as the type of fabric: the average dress holds approximately 9 meters of various fabrics. A meter of fabric costs NIS 100- 1500. The complexity of the design is also a factor: the more complex the stitching, the higher the price due to more hours of work.

Statistics say most brides choose this option, although it's the priciest. From here prices go down. So why pay the maximum? Who knows, I said I'm not a woman....

New from an Old Collection

Many designers offer lower prices on their "older collections". I still haven't understood the difference between the old and new collections, since in both cases these are dresses made especially for the bride that have not been worn. I believe this is an elegant way of lowering prices without seeming cheaper than the competitors. Who cares? It's 15-25% of savings.

Rental

The only difference between buying and renting a dress is that you have to return the dress. Which means you won't be able to pull it out of the attic in twenty years and cry nostalgically or will it to your grandchildren. You will be able, however, to save 20%. What the designer does with returned dresses leads us to your next option:

Secondhand Dresses

Most women I know will balk at the combination of "weddings dress" and "secondhand". The world of associations inspired by wedding dress is "new, virginal, white, new slate"... the opposite of what "secondhand" usually invokes. There are two types of secondhand wedding dresses:

Dresses that have been rented and returned to the designer:

Dresses that have been returned to the designer are usually used for store displays or to show potential customers. Of course, you will not always be given the ability to purchase / rent it, but a bit of cheek on your part could save you up to 50% of the original value of the dress.

"Oh My God" Dresses:

Some brides wake up the morning after the wedding and see their wedding dress, that cost thousands of NIS, crumpled, dirty, and crushed on the floor, and a huge realization suddenly drops on them (this could also happen when seeing the groom crushed, crumpled, and dirty on the floor). In order to save some of the money, they send the dress to be dry cleaned and take out an ad on the secondhand market.

The price range for these is NIS 500-5000, so you can score a pretty good catch in terms of cash, but it will be hard to find the seamstress to fit the dress exactly to your size.

Seamstress

Another option for getting a new dress is to skip the designer and go directly to the seamstress. Many brides snip out photos from magazines or websites and ask the seamstress to make one "just like it". Besides the slightly uncomfortable feeling of copyright infringement, you should also take into account the fact that a dress that looks great on Galit Gutman will not necessarily look so good on you.

Charity

A number of associations throughout Israel lend wedding dresses to brides with financial difficulties. In some cases, you will be asked for a modest donation in exchange for the dress. Yad Abraham, for example, offers a huge variety of over 600 dresses, and even provide a dress consultant - all free of charge. The dresses are donated by the best designers, so that you may receive a dress someone else paid NIS 15,000 for - for free.

Wedding dress, after all

Two things make a dress a wedding dress: A bride wears it, and it's white. You can find a white dress at any clothing store or fashion designer, not only wedding dress designers.
